Urban Outfitters Stirs up Controversy with T-Shirt Color

In the past week, Jezebel has been stirring up some fire with the discovery of a t-shirt color from Urban Outfitters that just didn’t seem right.

While searching for a t-shirt on Urban Outfitters online, the BDG Burnout Henley came up with the color choices of “White/Charcoal” and “Obama/Black” (see above). Was Urban Outfitters joking or for real?? Since so many people started to notice and complain to the store, the company finally commented:

“Many customers have brought to our attention one of the color names listed for our BDG Burnout Henley, and rightfully so. We screwed up, and are sincerely sorry. The burnout pattern on this shirt is comprised of two colors – one is an internally developed color we called “Obama Blue” and the other is “Black”. Unfortunately our website database truncated this combination to read “Obama/Black.” We should have caught the error, and apologize for offending anyone.”

So, it turns out that it was not intentional racism, but a stab at being patriotic and recognition for the president! Glad we finally have some answers!

  • Whew! I thought that this urban wear clothing is starting to become racist, and a huge trouble might stir up. But it's great that this minor misunderstanding has been dismissed, neither big nor small companies normally want trouble, right?

On other note, I think I'll take a look if they have a culture clothes section in their store because I want something that has an extreme sport shirt design, specifically the one that has a skateboarding motif.
