Over the knee boots appeared all over the Fall and Winter runways and have made their way into stores and maybe some of your closets. These boots are fun and statement-making but can easily go from trendy to trashy. They can also be difficult to work into your everyday look. But where’s the fun in buying them if you only wear them once? Here are some tips to making over-the-knee boots wearable:
- Choose a subtle color and material. Neutral shades like black, gray, cream, or brown will incorporate themselves easily into your wardrobe. These colors will make these boots your go-to shoes rather than an item you’ll have to spend too much time coordinating. Leopard print over-the-knee boots might be fun, but they are too over the top for casual or everyday wear– after all, they cover most of your legs! Likewise, the material of your boots should be subdued. Matte leather and suede work well, whereas patent leather and metallic finishes should be avoided.
- Match the color of the boots to your bottoms. A low contrast between the boot and your bottoms will flatter the leg without drawing too much attention. Try stuffing your dark blue skinnies into brown boots or black leggings into black boots. Plus, keeping within the same color family will elongate your leg and alleviate the shortening effect these boots can have. Who couldn’t use longer legs? Hot!
- Look for low heel heights. Over-the-knee boots can cross over into hooker territory easily, a la Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. A flat boot is chic yet casual enough to wear to class. If you prefer a heel, stick to one that’s low or stacked. This boot is sexy within itself, but a high stiletto could be overkill.
- Don’t pair them with short skirts. Or dresses. Again, picture Julia Roberts. Your legs will already look amazing with these tips, so keep them covered!
Remember, these tips are for making over-the-knee boot trend wearable in your daily life– to class, to hangout with friends, or go shopping. You can certainly wear them other ways for other occassions! What other ways do you guys rock the over-the-knee boot trend?
